Preparation for studying in Hong Kong

  1. Visa:  Once your child has been accepted by and institution, he/she must get a student visa or entry permit. Please click here to learn more about the application process and documents required.
  2. University Accommodation – Your child can choose either on-campus dormitories or off-campus apartments
    • On-campus dormitories: For University Grants Committee-funded institutions, non-local undergraduate students are normally offered hostel places for at least two years during their study period, probably the first two years of study.
    • Off-campus apartments: For those who cannot secure a hostel place, private rental accommodation is always an alternative. The rental for off-campus accommodation could be in the range of HK$8,000–15,000 a month.
  3. Public transportation – always a good idea to buy an Octopus card, which is used to pay for rides on almost all public transports.
    • MTR: wide network connecting HK Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and Lantau Island.
    • Buses & minibuses: Bus routes cover almost all areas of Hong Kong, and the service typically starts from early morning till late night.
    • Taxis: Hong Kong taxis are a very convenient and inexpensive way of point-to-point travel throughout the city. There are three types: red (for HK island and Kowloon), green (for the New Territories) and blue (on Lantau island).
  4. Payments
    • Octopus Card: is a contactless card with a set amount of money stored on it. Users can use it for transportations, at retail stores, vending machines, recreational facilities, restaurants, and online payments, etc.
    • Credit Cards: are widely accepted in Hong Kong and most businesses accept VisaMasterCard, Union Pay and American Express.
    • e-wallet: has been getting more popular in Hong Kong. An increasing number of people are making electronic payments using Alipay, WeChat Pay, TNG Wallet and Tap & Go, which can be credited with cash or link to credit or ATM cards.
    • BOC Pay: BoC Pay is a one-stop cross-border payment mobile application which enables mobile payment function in Greater Bay Area by scanning QR code with BoC Pay, without the need of opening a bank account in the Chinese mainland. BOC UnionPay Dual Currency Credit Card holders, BOCHK internet banking customers, and BOCHK ATM card customers can simply register online.
    • EPS: make payments to merchants by using the ATM card that is linked with bank accounts.
  5. Mobile Network
    Main mobile operators in Hong Kong are: China Mobile, China Unicom, CSL, New World Mobility, 3, SmarTone-Vodafone, PCCW Mobile. Please visit their official websites to know more about service plans and other services.

    A number of scholarships and awards are offered by the HKSAR Government, post-secondary institutions and other public or private organizations to assist non-local students finance their education in Hong Kong.

  3. Admission requirement – requirements for student admission may vary from institution to institution. In general, your child needs to:

    Complete secondary school, and attain satisfactory academic results at the National exams in your country

    Take the TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent exams if English is not the mother tongue
