Preparation for studying in the Chinese mainland
- Visa:Once your child has secured a place at a university and has proof of that, he/she needs to apply for a student visa (also known as an XI-visa) This can be done at the Chinese embassy in Cambodia which located in Phnom Penh as soon as possible. - University Accommodation:Your child can choose either on-campus dormitories or off-campus apartments
- On-campus dormitories: typical university accommodation is of good quality by international standard, the price can vary according to the university itself. They usually have showers, toilets, internet and water.
- Off-campus apartments: The easy way to rent an apartment is going through estate agents nearby the university. The rent is generally affordable, and it depends on the size and location.
- Public transportation – always a good idea of get a transport (Jiao Tong) card with you upon arrival
- Public buses are convenient and inexpensive way to get around the city
- Subway is another choice to get to campus. Underground rail system can be found in over 20 cities
- Bicycles are another common way of getting around the campus. Bikes are relatively inexpensive and are easy way to explore larger areas independently. Over the past few years, shared bikes have been very popular in major cities in China
- Taxis is another fast method of getting from one point to another. Currently, the most popular taxi-hailing APP in the Chinese mainland is DiDi, which can pay with Bank of China Phnom Penh Branch VISA Credit card and UnionPay debit card.
- Payment – Cashless society
The Chinese mainland is fast evolving into a cashless society. People no longer go out with cash but pay with their phone instead. There are the three most popular e-payment systems in the Chinese mainland: WeChat Pay, Alipay and UnionPay QR code payment.
Among them, UnionPay QR code payment has been widely accepted by merchants in mainland China and Hong Kong. Bank of China Phnom Penh Branch is going to launch UnionPay QR Code Payment function in mobile banking, so that customers can use mobile banking to scan UnionPay QR code for payment after binding Bank of China Phnom Penh Branch UnionPay debit card.
